Yes. ChatGPT supports DOCX uploads for questions, summaries and comparisons. Upload acceptance alone does not prove it retrieved every part of the document. Check answers against Word, especially for comments, tracked changes, tables and exceptions. OpenAI says document-file retrieval extracts digital text and discards embedded images; its file-upload guidance does not promise complete review-markup coverage.

Start here: attach the DOCX in a ChatGPT conversation, ask for its title and headings, then ask one known fact with a supporting passage. Compare both answers with the original in Word before relying on a summary. If review comments or proposed revisions matter, check those separately in Word’s Review pane.

This guide uses a downloadable fictional campaign policy. It includes a table and a separate approval exception, so you can distinguish finding one sentence from answering a question using all the relevant evidence. The example is an evaluation exercise, not a customer case study or measured assistant benchmark.

How to upload a Word document to ChatGPT

Open a conversation, select the attachment control and choose the DOCX file. Wait until it is available before asking your question. OpenAI’s supported-file documentation explicitly includes DOCX. A Google Docs shortcut is different: export the document to a supported format first. Confirm you are allowed to upload the contents to the service.

Begin with an inventory. Ask for the document title and main headings, then check those against Word. This can reveal whether you attached the wrong version or whether your question refers to a section absent from the uploaded copy. Keep the filename and version in the conversation when you attach more than one document.

Use only campaign-approval-example.docx. List its main headings and identify the table’s column headings. Then tell me the launch date and quote the supporting sentence. If you cannot find something, say so.

Keep the initial request narrow. Once you have verified the inventory and one straightforward fact, move to questions that combine sections. That gives you a clear point to investigate if a later answer fails.

Download the Word example. It describes a fictional Harbor campaign, a USD 18,000 budget, an approval table and an additional legal-review rule for customer quotations. All names and business details were created for this exercise.

The table reports current status. The surrounding paragraphs explain what that status means and when extra approval is required. This distinction is intentional: answering only from the table can miss a rule that changes the outcome. Keep the document open while you check each response.

Ask these questions in order. Record the answer, the cited heading and any supporting quote. The expected answers below come directly from the supplied document; they are not outputs copied from an assistant.

Verify the rule, the status and the exception

For an approval question, three pieces of information can matter: the general rule, the current status and an exception. Ask the assistant to separate them. An answer that correctly reports “marketing approved” still cannot conclude “ready to launch” when another reviewer is required. The missing approval is the reason for the conclusion.

Can the paid advertisements launch? Give the general approval rule, the current status from the table, and the missing approval. Cite each source separately. Do not treat “marketing approved only” as complete approval.

Then change the scenario: add a customer quotation to the approved email. The legal-review section now matters even though the table still says approved. A useful response names the extra requirement and explains why the prior approval does not settle the new question.

Finally, ask about the cancellation fee. The document does not give one. Treat an admission of missing information as a correct result. A plausible invented amount would be a failure, even if the response sounds confident and includes a nearby budget citation.

Can ChatGPT read Word comments and tracked changes?

OpenAI lists DOCX as a supported upload format, but its file-upload guidance does not establish that Word comments, their authors, anchored passages or tracked revisions will be available in an answer. Format support is a different claim from review-markup retrieval. Do not infer the latter from a correct answer about body text.

In Word’s Review pane, choose a comment whose text, author and linked passage you already know. Ask ChatGPT for those three details, then compare its answer with Word. For tracked changes, ask about one known proposed revision and check both the current final wording and the proposed wording in Word. If the response cannot identify either layer, treat that layer as unverified.

If those details are essential, create a copy you are permitted to share that spells out the comment text, author and anchored passage. Label it review notes, keep it separate from the approved body, and state which wording is current and which is merely proposed. Do not silently turn a suggested edit into policy or accept or reject changes just to make them readable. Creating or editing a document is a separate workflow from reading an uploaded file.

Check tables, headings and content outside the body

DOCX files can contain body paragraphs, tables, headers, footers, text boxes and embedded objects. A file reader may not expose all of these in the same way. If the answer depends on one of them, ask about that element directly and inspect the original. Embedded images in document files are discarded in OpenAI’s text-based retrieval, according to its file-upload guidance.

For tables, check the relationship between columns. “Marketing approved only” belongs to paid advertisements in this example; moving it to the email sequence changes the meaning. Ask for a small row-by-row extraction before requesting a summary of a large table. Include the row label and column heading in your verification notes.

Use descriptive headings in source documents intended for repeated questions. A heading such as “Exception for legal review” is easier to locate and cite than a generic “Notes” section. Keep the exception close enough to the rule that human readers also recognize their relationship.

Reading, reviewing and editing need different checks

A question-answering task succeeds when the response is supported by the source. A review task also needs coverage: which sections and issues were considered? An editing task adds another requirement: the resulting document must preserve the structure and behavior you need. Choose your verification method for the actual deliverable.

If you ask for a revised Word file, open the returned DOCX and inspect tables, headings and any changes you expected to review. Do not assume that an assistant’s description of its edits proves the file contains them. For a source-grounded question, a downloadable edited file may be unnecessary; a short answer with the relevant passages is easier to check.

Ask Your Docs is a document-retrieval workflow. Its Word ingestion extracts text; it is not a Word editor or a promise to preserve comments, tracked changes or page layout. Keep Word as the original editing environment when those features are part of the job.

Why can't ChatGPT read my Word document?

First determine whether the upload failed or the answer omitted something. Check that the document opens normally and is a real supported file. Confirm the account and workspace you are using, then consult OpenAI’s file-upload guidance for current limits. A larger quota does not repair a corrupt document or make image-only text accessible.

If the file is available but the response misses content, ask for the exact heading or table. Compare the relevant section with the uploaded version. For a complicated document, create a permitted copy containing the necessary section and its exceptions. Name what was removed so that a narrower answer is not mistaken for a review of the original.

Recurring questions work best when people know which document is authoritative. Give the policy an owner, version and review date. Remove or clearly identify superseded material, then repeat known-answer checks after an update. An answer can cite a real passage while still using an old rule.
