How to convert DOCX to Markdown
- Prepare a review copy. Resolve tracked changes, remove material that should not be shared, and save an unencrypted DOCX file. Keep the original Word document.
- Choose the file. The converter starts automatically. Use the fictional policy example if you want to see the output before choosing your own document.
- Read the conversion notes. Check warnings about unsupported styles, omitted images or merged tables. A successful export does not prove that every part of the original transferred.
- Compare the Markdown preview. Check the heading hierarchy, list order, table rows and any exception that changes the meaning of a rule.
- Copy or download. Paste the Markdown into your chosen editor, or download document.md. Verify the rendered result in that destination before publishing it.
Try a policy with a table and an exception
The fictional campaign policy names Priya Shah as owner and October 12, 2026 as the launch date. It includes an approval table and a customer-quotation exception. These details make it possible to inspect meaning as well as appearance.
After conversion, find the table row for paid advertising and the rule that requires marketing and finance approval. Then find the additional legal approval required for customer quotations. Keeping the table while losing that exception would produce an incomplete reference document, even if the output looked tidy.
The example contains no cancellation fee or exchange rate. Conversion should not add either. It is a format change, not an AI summary or an attempt to complete missing information. The Word document guide uses the same file to demonstrate questions and source checks.

Use real heading styles before converting
A large, bold paragraph can look like a heading in Word without carrying a heading style. The converter uses semantic structure rather than guessing from font size. For a maintained source, apply the appropriate heading styles in a copy of the document and keep the hierarchy consistent.
A policy might use a title, then headings for scope, responsibilities, approval rules and exceptions. Avoid choosing headings purely to get a particular appearance in one Markdown editor. The structure should help both a reader and a retrieval system understand which passages belong together.
Check tables as data, not just decoration
A Word table can contain merged cells, several paragraphs in one cell, nested tables and layout-only columns. Markdown tables have a simpler grid. Compare row labels and values side by side with the original, especially where a merged heading applies to several columns.
If the table is a calculation model, retain the spreadsheet that owns the calculation. This converter does not execute Word fields, update totals or validate numerical relationships. For an existing workbook, the Excel and CSV converter provides explicit sheet and cell-range selection.
Conversion limits and recovery
The browser tool accepts DOCX files up to 5 MB and rejects archives declaring more than 20 MB of unpacked content or more than 1,000 parts. Output is limited to 1 MB of Markdown. Processing stops after 15 seconds; the cancel button lets you stop sooner. These bounds favor a practical reference document over a large archive of embedded media.
If conversion fails, save a smaller copy containing the relevant section. For a scanned document, extract and verify the text with an OCR workflow first. An image of a page is not the same as editable document text. Renaming a PDF or older DOC file to DOCX does not convert its contents.
Resolve review changes before export. Accepting all changes may be wrong for your workflow, so the converter does not make that decision for you. Use the original document’s review process, then export the agreed version. Preserve any required comment and approval records separately.
Prepare a reusable reference page
Add the original filename, owner, version and review date around the converted text. Explain whether the document is current guidance, a historical record or a fictional example. A Markdown export without this context can be mistaken for an authoritative current policy long after the Word source has changed.
After adding it to a library, ask a question whose answer depends on both a general rule and an exception. Check the answer against the original source. Method and privacy
The tool uses Mammoth for semantic DOCX extraction, then an HTML-to-Markdown syntax-tree conversion. The intermediate HTML is never inserted into the page. Remote images are not loaded, unsafe link schemes are removed, and the preview displays Markdown as text. The tool does not call an AI model or send your selected file to our server.
Clearing the file or leaving the page releases the active conversion state. A downloaded file or clipboard copy remains under your control and can be shared by whichever application you use next. Review that output before distributing it.

Will the Markdown look exactly like my Word document?
No. Markdown represents document structure rather than page layout. Headings, lists and ordinary table text can transfer, but fonts, page breaks, headers, footers, comments and merged-cell layout do not. Check the original before sharing.
Can this convert older DOC files?
No. Open the file in a compatible word processor and save a DOCX copy first. Password-protected documents also need an unencrypted copy. Keep the original file and its access controls.
What happens to tracked changes?
The converter rejects tracked insertions, deletions and moves detected in the document body. Review a copy in Word and accept or reject changes before converting. Markdown is not a record of the Word review history.
